Anecdote about 1950 ‎(Age 78)‎

Note: Letter- Salmond was a name well known in the village of Duntocher, near Glasgow. Early in the 19th Century my Grandfather was employed in the paper mills in the village. Here my father was born in 1836. Father had two brothers William and Peter both of whom died in young manhood from infectious diseases prevalent in those days. Father, James who as soon as was able to work was half day at school and half day at work in the mill. Child labour was permitted yet he was a scholar. When the paper mills were burnt down work was terribly scarce. America was calling for settlers. Grandfather and Grandmother went there expecting to make a home, but Grandfather froze to death and Grandmother died. Father was cared for by his Grandmother ‎(Hamilton, I think was her name)‎ at Kingston a house on the way from Bishopton Station to Erskine House, but he had to got to farm work when young. First at the farm of Glenshinock and later at Hatton farm Bishopton. He was marries when about 20 years of age, living at Nether South Bar, Inchinnin for about 30 years. Mother, Jane Allison was married at 19 years of age. She was a very active outspoken woman, a warm hearted mother and very capable, She did not spare the rod when required, but having eight of a family closely packed, I expect it was the only way to keep order. Unfortunately she died when 58 years of age at Tardle House farm, Kilmarnock when I was 23 years of age.
